King John's Castle, an early Norman fortress named
after King John who visited Carlingford in 1410. Commissioned by Hugh de Lacy around 1190, it was the first fortified stone structure
in Carlingford. The castles of Carlingford and Greencastle, at the foot of the Mournes, enabled the
Normans to control the entrance to Carlingford Lough.
